Internet Safety Tip

I was just scrolling through Facebook and one of my “tech” friends (who just happens to be very funny) posted something that sent me to immediately respond. He posted one of those games where you fill out a survey on yourself, post it on your wall and then put the blank template for said survey in the comments so your friends can follow suit.

Here is my friend’s “game” (my answers are in bold):

1. FULL NAME: Princess Peach
2. FAVORITE COLOR: Pink
3. FAVORITE ICE CREAM: Strawberry
4. FIRST CAR (MAKE AND MODEL): Pink Cadillac
5. FIRST STREET YOU LIVED ON: Rainbow Rd.
6. MOTHERS MAIDEN NAME: Toadstool
7. FAVORITE FICTIONAL CHARACTER: Mario
8. FAVORITE MOVIE: Super Mario Bros
9. FIRST PET: dinosaur (love my Yoshi)
10. FAVORITE FOOD: I just want some cake.
11. BLOOD TYPE: mushroom +
12. SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER: 424-24-2424
13. FAVORITE FLOWER: Fire Flower

Ok, ok…I don’t know why I seen his game and immediately seen responses as though I was Princess Peach from the Mario life (games), but it happened and worked well. Now, the way I did it was all in fun. I assure you nothing about those answers even come close to representing myself in anyway.  However, please go back through those questions (minus the answers) and see if you can figure out why this is an “Internet Safety Post”. Have you seen those types of questions or given the answers to those types of questions when creating a new online account and answering those security questions?

I thought so…and so did my friend. Everytime you take one of these things, answer them with any sort of truthfulness,  and post it all over social media, you are asking for people, that aren’t honest by any means of the word, to “hack” into your accounts. This can (and will if the bad guys have a say) include your banking and even medical records.

Please exercise care when using social media. Not everyone really needs to know your social security number. If you do the “surveys” or “games” and don’t answer them truthfully,  kudos to you! Be mindful of what you post on the Internet. Let’s make it harder for people to get into the “identity theft” business!

(Nico, great post! Hope you like my answers!)

Stay safe out there friends
